Rain enhancement operation by air plane in Yunnan province

On March 15, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) allocated 33 million Yuan for meteorological departments°Į rain enhance in drought-affected Beijing, Hebei, Yunnan, Gansu and other 8 provinces.

Following the requirements of MOF and China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the fund will be used for expenses of rent of plane, air and ground operation, purchase of rockets, catalysts, rocket shells, personnel, training and others that are for rain enhancement.

According to the monitor of meteorological departments, since last winter, most parts of wheat growing areas in northern China and parts of Southwest China have seen continuous less-than-normal rainfall. In February 2012, the average rainfall in North China has been 1 mm, the third least in past 62 years. Yunnan and Sichuan have seen rainfall less than 10 mm, 80 percent less than same period. The meteorological departments have carried out rain enhancement to support spring farming and fresh water supply of the local people.

For years, the MOF has provided stable finance support for weather modification contributing greatly to the disaster prevention and mitigation of major grain production areas. (Mar. 21)
